The history lives on
in Leadville, where fortune were made and broken. Some local landmarks
have a lot to tell. Don’t miss the federally chartered National
Mining Hall of Fame and Museum with its life size replica of a hardrock
mine; the Tabor Opera House, once an elegant showcase for great performances
by Harry Houdini, John Phillip Sousa and Oscar Wilde; Western Hardware,
supplier to the international mining trade with its famous wall of
1000 drawers; The Heritage Museum and its replica of Leadville’s
Ice Palace; Healy House and Dexter Cabin, a display of self-made
fortunes; and The Route of the Silver Kings, a self guided tour through
the mining district.
Regardless of the season,
the great outdoors is the playground of choice in Leadville. Vast
networks of trails invite hiking, mountain biking, camping, and off-road
4WD touring throughout the warmer months. Ample area lakes and streams
are full of trout. And when the snow flies you’ll enjoy snowmobiling,
snow shoeing and cross country skiing.
Leadville’s mining
heritage is celebrated throughout the year at such events as the
Crystal Carnival Celebration, Boom Days and the 100-mile Mosquito
Marathon. A motherlode of family fun and festivities.
