DESCRIPTION
The gateway to
the Holy Cross Wilderness area, Minturn was established in 1887
with the arrival of the Rio Grande Railroad. An eclectic community filled with specialty shops, culinary delights
and a quaint bed and breakfast, it offers quiet respite from the
nearby world-class ski resorts of Vail and Beaver Creek.
Once the destination for miners seeking their fortunes in the nearby
Gilman Mine, Minturn is one of two original and historic towns, along
with Red Cliff, in eastern Eagle County. Minturn is now a mecca for
those seeking the ultimate outdoor adventure in the Holy Cross Wilderness
area. Summer months offer magnificent vistas and an incredible show
of wildflowers while on foot or bicycle. The Eagle River, which runs
through the town, provides outstanding kayaking and rafting. Once
the snow arrives, it’s hard to find a better place to snowmobile.
The Forest Service Headquarters for the Holy Cross Wilderness area
is located in Dowd Junction, 2 miles north of downtown Minturn.
