DESCRIPTION
Near the foot of
Colorado's highest mountain, Mt. Elbert, about 23 miles southwest
of Leadville and 38 miles from Aspen, a popular summer vacation
destination
was
built
in the 1860’s attracting the well-to-do with spectacular
scenery and the states largest glaciated lake. Twin Lakes,
an important tourist attraction as early as 1860’s was
deemed to be “...the most charming summer resort in Colorado.” by
Crofutt’s Grip-sack Guide of Colorado.
|
Twin Lakes was added to the National Historic Register
in the 1970s and continues to enchant visitors with its original
structures dating back to the 1870s. On the southern shore of the
lake sits the famous resort hotel, Interlaken, which, in its day,
rivaled the famous Broadmoor, sporting a 30-foot cutter yacht, a
50-foot steamship, fountains, a dance pavilion and a two story outhouse.
The Interlaken is now maintained by the U.S. Forest Service as a
National Historic Site.
Visitors continue to enjoy fishing and boating on the
lakes and strolling the streets of the Village of Twin Lakes, stopping
for a bite to eat or drink and staying overnight in comfortable accommodations.
